KUCHING, Feb 24: The newly constructed Ang Cheng Ho multi-purpose hall, built at a cost of RM15 million in Batu Kawah, is now fully functional, announced Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, revealed that the multi-purpose hall is the first phase of the 20-acre Ang Cheng Ho Quarry redevelopment project initiated by the Sarawak government.
Situated atop an eight-storey man-made lake, the hall falls under the jurisdiction of Majlis Perbandaran Padawan (MPP).
“For those interested in organising events or utilising the facilities, such as non-governmental organisations, they can contact the council (MPP),” Dr Sim stated during the Batu Kawah Chinese New Year 2024 Open House event held at the multi-purpose hall today.
Expressing his satisfaction with the project’s progress, Dr Sim highlighted its significance for tourism development and community recreation in Batu Kawah and beyond.
Collaborating with the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performance, the area is poised to host an innovation hub center under Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS) to foster economic development opportunities for the youth.
Dr Sim envisioned the project as a pivotal addition to the recreational landscape of Batu Kawah and Kuching City, complementing existing facilities like the Batu Kawah Waterfront Park.
Moreover, plans are underway to acquire surrounding private land to expand the quarry area, potentially transforming it into a comprehensive waterpark featuring amenities such as hotels, shopping centers, water sports facilities, and even rock climbing activities.
The redevelopment project of the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry was inaugurated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Johari Tun Openg in January 2020.
Among those present at the event were Dr Sim’s wife Datin Amar Enn Ong Siok Ean, Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang, Political Secretary to Sarawak Premier’s Department Kho Teck Wan, MPP chairman Tan Kai, Temenggong Tan Joo Phoi, and other dignitaries. — DayakDaily
