KUCHING, Nov 9: Michael Kong Feng Nian, special assistant to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) Chong Chieng Jen, has expressed gratitude to the Sarawak Social Welfare Department for their proactive approach in addressing the needs of a homeless person named Nor.
Nor had been residing on the five-footway of Jalan Abell for the past two to three months, prompting concerns from nearby business owners about unsanitary conditions and increased littering.
“As committed advocates for our community, we could not simply turn a blind eye. George Lam (DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Kuching chief), Anthony Chin (DAPSY Kuching secretary), and I visited the site in the hope of witnessing Nor’s struggles firsthand and gaining a deeper understanding of her situation.
“Our mission was clear: extend a helping hand. To ensure this, we were joined by Mr Amir and Mr Norazman from the Welfare Department, all working together with the shared goal of reaching out to Nor.
“However, an unexpected twist occurred when Nor spotted the Welfare Department officers. Overcome by fear, she fled the scene, leaving us unable to offer the immediate assistance she so desperately needed,” he explained in the statement.
In spite of the setback, the Welfare Department has responded to their plea for assistance, according to Kong.
“They have agreed to conduct a thorough investigation and devise strategies to aid Nor.
“We have likewise pledged our unwavering support to ensure that the Ministry of Health provides her with the necessary medical attention she so urgently requires.”
He continued, “We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Welfare Department for their dedication and willingness to assist in cases like Nor’s.” — DayakDaily
