KUCHING, July 21: A total of 2,530 commercial crime cases were recorded in Sarawak between Jan 1 and June 30 this year—an increase of 674 cases, or 36.31 per cent, compared with the 1,856 cases recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.
“The increase was mainly driven by cybercrime cases, including e-commerce scams, non-existent investment scams, non-existent loan scams, fake job offers, and telecommunications scams,” said Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak at the Sarawak Police Commissioners’ Monthly Assembly for July 2026 here today, as reported by TVS.
In terms of financial losses, he revealed that RM90.4 million was recorded during the first six months of this year, compared with RM66.7 million during the corresponding period last year, representing an increase of RM23.6 million, or 35.38 per cent.
Meanwhile, rape cases in the State recorded an increase of 39 cases or 53 percent for the period from January 1 to June 30, 2026, compared to the same period last year.
Saifullizan said the increase was recorded even though the overall index crime statistics in the State showed a decrease of 462 cases.
“In addition, armed robbery cases increased by two cases, while armed robbery cases also increased by one case compared to the same period last year,” he said.
For Violent Crime cases as a whole, a decrease of four cases or one per cent was recorded during the period in question, with Property Crime recording a more significant decrease of 458 cases or 22 per cent, with no increase recorded for any of the relevant category breakdowns. — DayakDaily
