KUCHING, Nov 7: The Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and CyberSarawak to strengthen inter-agency coordination and prepare early response measures against potential cyberattacks amid growing concerns over cybersecurity incidents involving banks.
Sarawak Police Commissioner CP Saifullizan Ishak said he had directed the CCID to arrange a meeting to ensure both agencies were prepared to respond to potential cyber threats in the State.
He said early action was necessary to establish clear coordination and responsibilities among the relevant agencies in the event of a cyber incident.
“We are already moving in that direction and will seek to involve the relevant agencies. At the Sarawak level, we have our cybersecurity agency, and we will certainly work with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at the federal level as well,” he said.
Saifullizan was speaking to reporters after the launching ceremony of a futsal court at Kuching Police Headquarters today.
He also disclosed that police had received four reports involving unsuccessful ATM withdrawals in Miri, with no similar cases reported in other districts so far.
However, he stressed that investigations were ongoing to determine whether the incidents were linked to cyberattacks or technical problems.
“At this stage, it may be related to a technical issue. If it were a cyberattack, it would have a wider impact across the system. That is my initial assessment, but we will proceed with further investigations,” he said.
He said police would continue working with the relevant agencies to strengthen preparedness and ensure a coordinated response to potential cyber threats. — DayakDaily
