Covid-19: Sarawak breaks daily record with 555 new cases in 25 districts

KUCHING, April 9: Sarawak has set a new record for the highest number of Covid-19 cases recorded in a single day with 555 cases recorded in 25 districts, after the previous highest record of 426 cases on March 28.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said Sibu topped the list with 115 new cases, followed closely by Bintulu with 112 cases.


Other districts reporting new cases were Miri (70), Kapit (61), Meradong (57), Mukah (46), Kuching (29), Sarikei (12), Beluru (8), Subis (8), Sri Aman (7), Julau (7), Asajaya (4), Samarahan (3), Saratok (3), Selangau (2), Bukit Mabong (2), Tatau (2), Belaga (1), Betong (1), Song (1), Limbang (1), Bau (1), Serian (1) and Sebauh (1).

With that, the cumulative number of positive cases in Sarawak now stands at 19,262.

Out of the 555 cases today, he noted that 292 cases were detected following close contact screenings where 69 of them were symptomatic.

He added that 124 cases were individual screenings from existing active clusters, where none showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19.

Additionally, 95 cases were from other screenings in health facilities, 43 cases were from symptomatic tests in health facilities and one Import-A case who returned from Equatorial Guinea.

With 263 new recoveries recorded throughout Sarawak today, there are still 3,552 patients who are receiving treatment in hospitals across the State.

Uggah, who is also deputy chief minister, also reported three new deaths from Covid-19, thus raising the death toll to 120 cases. — DayakDaily
