SIBU, June 28: A 34-year-man was fined a maximum of RM100,000 or six months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court today for conveying 2,520 litres of illegal liquor in bottles and tins.
Nornikman Sidek of Kampung Bahagia Jaya, who pleaded guilty to the offence, was also ordered to pay RM12,600 in default four-weeks jail for the customs duty of the liquor.
He was charged under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Custom Act 1961 for the offence.
The offence provides for a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000, whichever is greater and not less than 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000 and not less than five-years jail or both if convicted.
According to the charge sheet, Custom officers had at about 12.50pm on July 3, 2019, inspected a container at the Royal Custom Malaysia office here for illicit goods.
Upon inspection, they found an assortment of 2,520 litres of beers valued at RM13,105. The liquor had a custom duty amounting to RM12,600. — DayakDaily
