KUCHING, Dec 12: Households under the MySRBN internet subscription programme are urged not to download large files such as films or movies to allow fairer use of bandwidth among all users.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this is the only request from him to all users of MySRBN internet packages.

“There’s only one thing I ask from you, don’t download films. Like Netflix, if you download films from there for an hour, then people won’t have the chance to use it (the internet).

“For schools, for businesses, the 30mpbs speed is enough. There’s no problem. I’m only concerned with people using the internet line to download movies,” he said when launching the Sarawak, Linking, Urban, Rural, and Nation-Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (SALURAN-MySRBN) at Padang Central, Simunjan here today.

Abang Johari, who is also Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for N26 Gedong, said the MySRBN packages are free for the first month of subscription, and thereafter, the services are subsidised by the Sarawak government.

The MySRBN project in which the allocation will be channelled through Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), is the Sarawak government’s commitment to ensuring 93.6 percent of high-speed broadband network coverage in Sarawak rural and suburban areas in Q4’2022, up from 54.2 per cent currently.

MySRBN uses Fixed Wireless Broadband (FWB) technology, allowing for quick implementation by utilising existing infrastructure and providing unlimited access to rural and suburban populations throughout Sarawak, as well as internet speeds of up to 30mbps.

In Simunjan and Gedong districts in particular, there are four towers – three in Simunjan and one in Gedong – that have been equipped with MySRBN since February 2021, and 447 premises have acquired MySRBN services to-date.

With the launch of the SALURAN-MySRBN, eight more SMART towers – five in Simunjan and three in Gedong – equipped with connectivity systems will be ready to be built under the initiative.

SALURAN will benefit 38,429 consumers by the first quarter of 2022 while Simunjan and Gedong districts will have 97.9 per cent reach, up from the present 59.6 per cent.

The implementing agencies involved in the development of the SALURAN telecommunication tower are SDEC, Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). ā€” DayakDaily
