KUCHING, Sept 28: Beijing BECA Sci-Tech Co Ltd and Sinopec Engineering Incorporated of China are eager to conduct a geotechnical study on the proposed Petrochemical and Refinery Integrated Project in Lawas once their personnel are allowed to travel to Sarawak.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan was briefed by the Chinese investors on their intention via video conferencing today following their findings from a feasibility study for the project.

Awang Tengah, who is also Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development (Mintred) told the investors that both the Sarawak and federal governments will facilitate the proposed investment so that it could materialise and bring benefit to both parties, other investors and the State.

According to a statement, Beijing BECA and Sinopec Engineering chose Sarawak particularly Lawas as it is strategically located within the Asean region and the consumer market.

The project would provide not only employment opportunities for locals but also bring economic spinoffs to local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in many sectors including construction, logistics, maintenance of facilities, supply of food, accommodation and so on.

Assistant Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, Mintred permanent secretary Datu Liaw Soon Eng and senior officials from relevant departments and agencies were also present in the meeting. — DayakDaily
