KUCHING, June 13: A total of 516 households in Miri Division affected by recent floods and relocated to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) are in the process of receiving compassionate cash aid (BWI).

Miri Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) chairman and Miri Resident Galong Luang emphasised that the aid allocation — covering 201 households in Miri District, 260 in Subis, and 55 in Beluru — has already been channelled to the respective District Offices and is in the process of being disbursed to eligible recipients.

Meanwhile, the aid applications involving 7,503 households who were affected by the floods but did not evacuate are still being assessed for eligibility by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

“These applications include 1,174 households in Miri, 2,763 in Subis, 2,219 in Beluru, 207 in Telang Usan, and 1,140 in Marudi.

“The applications have been submitted to the SDMC and are currently under the process of determining eligibility criteria,” he said in a statement on Thursday (June 12).

He was responding to a news report highlighting that flood victims in Miri have yet to receive the RM1,000 compassionate cash aid. Miri MP Chiew Choon Man had earlier raised concerns over the delay in disbursing the assistance, following one of the worst floods in Sarawak’s history earlier this year, which severely impacted thousands of residents through property damage and loss of income.

In addition, Galong highlighted that five next-of-kin of individuals who lost their lives in a landslide at Kampung Lereng Bukit will also receive BWI death benefit payments soon, currently being processed by the Miri District Office.

“The Miri DDMC has also proposed 75 repair projects in response to damages caused by the 2024/2025 Northeast Monsoon. These proposals have been submitted to the State-level committee for consideration,” he added.

Galong reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring that all aid distribution and administrative processes are carried out according to established guidelines.
