Calling for badminton players to join Sarawak Energy Cup 2022 this May

KUCHING, April 9: Sarawakian shuttlers can look forward to more than RM20,000 worth of prize money in the much-anticipated Sarawak Energy Cup 2022 tournament.

After a hiatus brought about by the global Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s event will be held with the appropriate safety and health measures at Sarawak Badminton Association Hall along Lorong Lapangan Terbang in Kuching on May 20, 2022.

Games will be played on a group league system in the first round, followed by a single knock-out system with semi-finals and the final play-off.

Matches will be played on a 21-point 3 game system. Each player is permitted to participate in one tie per match.

This event is an Inter-Team Badminton Tournament, with five matches, including Men’s Double Open, Novice Men’s Double, Combined Age 90 yrs old (ages 35 and above), Men’s Double Open and Veteran Men’s Double. The team that wins three matches is the winner.

The main prize for the team events is the Sarawak Energy Cup with accompanying cash prizes and medals, followed by the Sarawak Energy Shield and Sarawak Energy Plate.

The winning team of the Sarawak Energy Cup will take home RM8,000, a trophy and medals, while the first runner-up will receive RM4,000 and medals. Semi-finalists will receive RM2,000 each.

The winning team of the Sarawak Energy Shield will bag RM2,000, while the first runners-up will receive RM1,000. Semi-finalists will receive RM500 each.

For the Sarawak Energy Plate, the team winner will win RM500, while the first runners-up will receive RM300.

Participation is open to Sarawakians or those holding a long-term permit to work in Sarawak only.

The closing date for registration is by 12pm on May 11, after which a draw for the teams’ placement will be conducted at 11am on May 18 at Sarawak Badminton Association Hall.
