KANOWIT, Oct 16: Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry Sibu branch apprehended a businessman and seized 2,900 litres of illegal diesel and a lorry worth RM24,901 here yesterday.
Its Sibu branch chief Kelyn Bolhassan said the 61-year- old suspect was caught at a petrol kiosk after allegedly filling his jerry cans with diesel which were placed at the back of his lorry.
“The suspect failed to provide any document to prove that he had the permit to own such a large quantity of diesel which is a control item,” he said.
Kelyn said he was subsequently detained for investigation under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961.
“We have also seized his lorry and both items were worth RM24,901,” he said.
The offence provides for a fine of RM1 million for an individual offender and RM2 million for a company if convicted in court.
Kelyn said action would also be taken against the operator of the petrol kiosk for selling the diesel in large quantity to the suspect.
He said under the law, members of the public are not allowed to purchase diesel or petrol more than the quantity of their vehicle petrol tank without permit.
“Petrol stations are also advised not to sell the two items to the public more than the quantity allowed under the Act. Stern action will be taken against them if they are caught,” he warned.
Meanwhile he said members of the public who would want to provide information or complaints against errand traders could do so through various channels.
