Businessman jailed one day, fined RM10,000 for bribery

SAMARAHAN, Aug 12: The Kota Samarahan Sessions Court sentenced a businessman charged with bribing government authority with RM500 to one day’s imprisonment and fined him RM10,000 in or default of one month’s jail.

Awang Zaidi Awang Seriee, 58, pleaded guilty before Judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong who accepted his plea and sentenced him to imprisonment of one day and fined the accused RM10,000 or in default to one month’s imprisonment.

The accused was charged with bribing government authority with RM500 cash as an inducement not to take action against him on June 19, 2020, thus committing an offence under the Immigration Act as his premises was suspected of being used as a place to transit Indonesians illegally.


He was charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which carries a fine of five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000 or whichever is higher, and imprisonment of not more than 20 years upon conviction.

DPP Miller Jawoi prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented by counsel. — DayakDaily
