KUCHING, April 11: The Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) has recorded some 61,900 visitors since its opening on March 9.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the number of visitors that thronged BCM shows the popularity of the State’s latest gem, pride, and joy.

“Looking at the total number of visitors since its opening five weeks ago, we get an average of 1,600 people who visited BCM.

“Although most of them are locals, it shows how popular our museum is. So this is a very positive outlook,” Ting said after chairing the Sarawak Tourism Coordination Committee (STCC) meeting today.

The RM308 million museum which took four years to complete is the second largest museum in Southeast Asia and Malaysia’s largest to date.

Taking up space in an impressive 30,000sqm building, BCM is spread out over five floors.

It is home to over 1,000 artefacts, proving the rich culture and heritage of the indigenous peoples of Borneo and Sarawak.

Entrance is free at the moment.

Now that Malaysian’s international border has officially opened on April 1, Ting said this ended almost two years of stringent border controls introduced to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.

He added that Sarawak looks forward to welcoming a global audience not just to BCM but the whole State as this will also revitalise the economy, particularly tourism, which was severely affected by the pandemic. — DayakDaily
