Bomba’s Hazmat team is on standby to contain coronavirus in Sarawak

KUCHING, Feb 5: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) is prepared to assist relevant agencies in curbing Wuhan coronavirus outbreak in the state.

Sarawak director Khirudin Drahman said the department’s hazardous material unit team (Hazmat) has been told to be on standby in the event they receive a request from Ministry of Health (MOH) through Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN).


“Our Hazmat team can respond to decontamination process for those entering and exiting the state. They have the expertise and capabilities to handle this type of situation.

“We have two teams in the state, one each at Tabuan Jaya and Bintulu. So we are ready at anytime needed, following our standard operating procedures (SOP),” Khirudin said at a press conference after the department’s annual parade ceremony today.

Yesterday, a team from Hazmat were at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), to assist MOH after a special flight carrying Malaysian nationals from Wuhan arrived safely.

He also praised and thanked the state government for all the various initiatives to control the virus from spreading further in efforts to ensure the safety and health of the people living in Sarawak. —DayakDaily
