Body of missing elderly Kenyah man recovered from Rajang River

KAPIT, April 30: The body of a 56-year-old Kenyah man, who was reported missing after failing to return home from fishing downstream of Batang Rajang last Saturday (April 27), was recovered today.

The search and rescue (SAR) team from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak Belaga Station reported that the victim, identified as Awi Lahang, was located by members of the public at around 3.10pm.

His body was found floating on the banks of the Rajang River near Rh Lat Punan Baiu, about 25 kilometres from Giam Tukuk and 50km from the operation base set up at Uma Badeng Long Dungun jetty.

The SAR teams, comprising the Bomba, Sarawak Rivers Board, police and Civil Defence Force (APM) along with their assets including seven boats provided by villagers, were conducting their search along the Rajang riverbanks for the second day when they were informed of the discovery.

They immediately rushed to the site and retrieved the body, which was then handed over to the police for further action.
