Bodies of two children believed to have drowned found in Batang Rajang

KAPIT, June 2: The bodies of two children believed to have drowned while swimming with their families at Nanga Semawang, Batang Rajang on May 31 were found this morning.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in a statement said it’s Kapit fire station control room received the information from the police at 7.30am that the body of Damien Dashey Sedan Donny, 9, had been found in Kapit jurisdiction, while the body of Chelsea Charity Darrie Ricky, 10, was found in Song.

Damien’s body was found by his family members about 20 meters away from Rh Ekaw at 7.15am.

Villagers found Chelsea’s body near SK Nanga Embuau, approximately 20km away from Rh Ekaw.

The bodies of both victims were handed over to the police in Kapit and Song for further action.

On Gawai eve, eyewitnesses said that the children were swimming by the riverbank near Rh Ekau when they were swept away by the current.

An initial search and rescue (SAR) effort was conducted by villagers.

After failing to locate the children, an emergency call was made to Bomba at 5.42pm.

The SAR operation involved the police, Civil Defence Force and villagers, covering a search radius of 24km from where the children were last seen. — DayakDaily
