Two missing children feared drowned at Nanga Semawang

An SAR operation is underway for two children feared drown at Nanga Semawang, Batang Rajang.

KAPIT, June 1: Two children are feared to have drowned while swimming with their families at Nanga Semawang, Batang Rajang yesterday evening.

They have been identified as Chelsea Charity Darrie Ricky, 10, and Damien Dashey Sedan Donny, 9.


The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre in a statement said according to witnesses, the children were swimming by the river bank near Rh Ekau when they were swept away by the current.

Bomba received the emergency call at 5.42pm and a team of six firefighters were despatched to the scene located 18km away from the Kapit firestation.

It was also understood that when Bomba were notified, the caller stated that both children were already missing for half-an-hour.

An initial search and rescue (SAR) effort was conducted by villagers.

Due to nightfall, the search and rescue operations was postponed at 7.05pm.

Today’s search continues with the involvement of the police, Civil Defence Force and villagers, covering a 24km radius from where the children were last seen. — DayakDaily
