MUKAH, Nov 12: The Bintulu Region 5 Marine Police Force (PPMW5) successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle cigarettes and liquor of various brands in the area behind the Boulevard Setiaraja here yesterday.
In the 3.30pm operation code name ‘Ops Landai COVID-19’ led by the Commanding Officer of PPMW5 Bintulu, ASP Ezuandi Bahadin, the team detained a vehicle driven by a 22-year-old local man believed to be the owner of the vehicle.
“An inspection carried out on the vehicle found cigarettes and liquor of various brands placed on the rear seat, including the bonnet of the vehicle,” Ezuandi said in a statement today.
He said the vehicle owner failed to furnish any documents related to the ownership of cigarettes and liquor.
The man was later arrested and taken to the Mukah Police Station to assist in the investigation into the ownership of the smuggled goods.
Meanwhile, ASP Ezuandi said, cigarettes and liquor seized including vehicles were to be used as evidence in the case.
“The success of the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) team in stopping this smuggling activity is also another success of the PPMW5 Bintulu team in curbing the smuggling of these contraband,” he added.
According to him, this case will be referred to the Bintulu police for investigation under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1965 -DayakDaily
