KUCHING, Dec 12: The Batang Rambungan Bridge project is now in the re-tendering process after the previous contractor was terminated due to failure to adhere to the schedule set by the Public Works Department (JKR).

According to Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak, Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, it is the only bridge on the coastal road route that has not been completed, and it would be the longest bridge across the river in Malaysia.

“We give emphasis to the construction of the Batang Rambungan Bridge because the bridge is the only one that connects Kuching-Lundu,” he said.

He said this during a site visit to the upgrading works on the Kebun Kampung Beradek-Semilang road at Pulau Tanjung Embang today.

According to TVS, the project started on Dec 17, 2019, after the Sarawak government took over it when the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government cancelled its implementation in 2018.

It was scheduled to be completed within 36 months or on Dec 16, 2022, but due to several factors, the project was delayed.

The 560m-long bridge, which cost RM98.5 million, was built by a local contractor in collaboration with a company from China.
