KUCHING, Oct 31: The Batang Lupar 2 Bridge is now officially open to traffic, serving as a new landmark while strengthening connectivity between Sri Aman and Betong.
According to the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), the 870-metre bridge also features a 145.5-metre-high cable-stayed tower, making it Malaysia’s highest cable-stayed bridge tower. This distinctive feature highlights the bridge’s engineering significance and establishes it as a new landmark in Sri Aman.
It was constructed in accordance with JKR R5 standards and designed to accommodate a four-lane dual carriageway. Its design also provides a navigational clearance of 200 metres in width and 23 metres in height.
The bridge is expected to shorten the travelling distance between Sri Aman and Betong from approximately 73 kilometres to 28 kilometres, while reducing travel time from about one hour to around 25 minutes.
The Package B3 project also includes constructing approximately 2,355 metres of bridge access roads, built to JKR R5 standards and equipped with roadside drainage systems, road facilities, and safety barriers.
As part of the Second Trunk Road (STR) network, the more direct connection is also expected to help reduce business logistics costs, improve access to rural areas and create greater opportunities for investment, commercial development, and ecotourism. — DayakDaily
