KUCHING, May 26: The upgrading works for Bario STOLport, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and safety, are expected to be fully completed by March 2026, said Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman, explained that the Federal government approved the project following several engagement sessions between his ministry and the Ministry of Transport Malaysia.
“This initiative responds to longstanding requests to improve the STOLport’s operations and safety, as the current runway has been subject to restrictions by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), limiting aircraft capacity to only nine passengers per flight due to weight constraints,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) here today.
According to Lee, the project is managed by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) and began in September 2024.
“The scope includes extending the existing runway from 671 metres to 930 metres, with a 259 metre paved extension and a 412 metre clearway.
“It also involves resurfacing of the existing runway, new line markings, extension of the runway strip, installation of a new windsock and the provision of new Automated Weather System (AWS) equipment,” he said, adding that supporting works include site clearing, earthworks, geotechnical improvements, drainage installation, fencing, grass planting, and minor terminal upgrades.
Lee further stated that upon completion, the upgraded Bario STOLport will be able to accommodate aircraft with a capacity of up to 19 passengers, significantly enhancing rural air connectivity for the Bario community. — DayakDaily
