KUCHING, April 8: Tiling Timber Pty Ltd from Australia wants to source a supply of engineered wood products from Sarawak.
With that, the company, which is one of Australia’s largest timber wholesalers and importers, is looking into a joint investment with local investors to produce glulam and laminated veneer lumber utilising acacia from forest plantations.
This was conveyed to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan today who welcomed the delegation from Tiling Timber led by its managing director Glenn Tiling as well as a Malaysian timber company, Woodsfield headed by managing director Eddie Ling.
Awang Tengah has urged Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) to formalise the joint venture between Tiling Timber and Woodsfield to produce engineered wood products for the export market which can be used for building components and structures.
“I hope that Tiling Timber could firm up their business consideration to invest in engineered wood-based products in Sarawak.
“The proposed project is in line with Sarawak government’s timber industry transformation and reformation initiatives towards promoting the production of high value timber products using timber species from forest plantation,” he said in a statement after receiving the delegations in his office at Wisma Sumber Alam today.
Awang Tengah, who is also Minister for International Trade and Investment, also pointed out the need for the joint venture entity to invest in automation technology to enhance productivity and produce globally accepted standard products.
Ministry’s acting permanent secretary Dzulkornain Masron and STIDC general manager Datu Hashim Bojet were also present during the meeting. — DayakDaily
