Asset declaration motion political move to please voters, says PBK

Voon Lee Shan

KUCHING, July 2: Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan said the motion to make it mandatory for all MPs to declare their assets is only a political move to please the voters.

The motion by the Pakatan Harapan government was approved at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday with Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof saying it was an unanimous decision after none of the opposition objected to the motion when the Speaker called for a voice vote. The motion had been debated from 12 noon until 6pm.

The motion will make it mandatory for the MPs, their spouses and children below the age of 21 and trustees to declare their assets.

“The fact that MPs are required to declare assets shows that abuse of power and corruption in the country has reached an intolerable level,” Voon alleged in a statement.

He also alleged that the asking for bribes may not be direct and could be done in many ways and that many tenders and decisions could be predetermined before official decisions are made or tenders called.

Voon added that the motion cannot come with a sanction and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) law has to be amended to plug the loopholes. — DayakDaily
