KUCHING, July 21: The Department of Marine Fisheries Sarawak (JPLS) has been urged to expand its artificial reef programme to the waters off Kuala Rajang and Kuala Paloh, with the move seen as crucial to protecting fish stocks, curbing destructive fishing practices and securing long-term incomes for coastal fishing communities.
In a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the proposal followed the positive impact of the artificial reef programme previously implemented in the waters off Kuala Paloh.
“More than 30 artificial reef units had been deployed by JPLS in Kuala Paloh waters in 2025 to protect marine habitats while helping to curb fishing activities that could damage the ecosystem.
“I hope JPLS can consider adding more artificial reefs around the waters of Kuala Rajang and Kuala Paloh so that the marine resources in this area can continue to be preserved and benefit the fishing community,” he said during the Belawai Fishermen’s Touch Point Interaction and Handover Ceremony 2026 at the Belawai Community Hall on Monday (July 20).
He said artificial reefs act as underwater sanctuaries that allow marine life to breed undisturbed, helping replenish fish stocks and secure the future of local fisheries.
Len stressed that conserving marine resources must remain an ongoing priority as the fisheries sector is a key economic driver for coastal communities, particularly those in Kuala Rajang.
He added that developing the fishing industry requires more than financial assistance and infrastructure for fishermen, but also effective measures to safeguard marine ecosystems.
According to him, sustainable fisheries management would help ensure a continuous supply of marine products while enabling fishermen to enjoy more stable catches and improve their household incomes. — DayakDaily
