The army thwarted a local man's attempt to smuggle 340 bags of imported Indian onions out of Sarawak via an illegal road near Malaysia-Indonesia border on March 17, 2024.

BAU, March 18: The Malaysian army has thwarted a local man’s attempt to smuggle 340 bags of imported Indian onions out of Sarawak at the Empaling oil palm plantation here yesterday (March 17).

According to a statement by the army’s Eastern Field Command (MK PMTTD), the arrest and confiscation was made by the First Division Infantry formation unit which was out patrolling as part of Op Awas/Keris Parang at about 11.15am, at a distance of 400 metres from the Malaysia-Indonesia border.


“The army unit has detained a suspicious-looking local lorry that tried to enter Indonesia using an illegal road.

“Inspection results found that the 47-year-old lorry driver had brought a load of 340 bags of imported Indian onions to be smuggled into Indonesia,” it said.

All seized items including a Mitsubishi Fuso truck, are estimated to be valued at RM158,960.

Additionally, a police report has been lodged at Bau Police Station and all seized items have been handed over to Kuching Customs for further action. — DayakDaily
