KUCHING, Oct 25: A total of 626 sports bodies in Sarawak have been deregistered from 2011 to Jun 19, 2023, including a total of 306 this year alone.

Elaborating on these statistics, Malaysian Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias said the deregistrations were generally due to inactivity, including the non-submission of compulsory information and annual reports,

“These are the compulsory prerequisites that must be adhered to by all these sports associations nationwide including Sarawak,” he shared.

Suhardi told reporters after the town hall session with Sarawak sports bodies at Auditorium Kompleks Belia Dan Sukan Sarawak here today.

He further elaborated that these deregistered bodies have the opportunity to appeal to the authority and give constructive reasons that are acceptable on why their deregistration could be reconsidered.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports has 30 days to reply the appeal. The presiding committee on the matter could re-consider if the reasons are legitimate,” he explained.

Suhardi advised associations facing deregistration not to give up and to seek assistance from their main sports body and the authority to be active again.

“We want every sport body and their associations to be active and lead their members and the sports to greater heights. So it’s not the end of life for those who are deregistered,” he said.

As of Oct 16, 2023, a total of 105 new sports associations or clubs have registered in Sarawak, bringing the overall number to 1,417, the second highest after Selangor.
