KUCHING, Aug 30: Outgoing Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk James Chan Khay Syn expressed his gratitude in an overwhelming farewell speech to his extended ‘family’ members today.

Chan, has served as the city’s mayor for the past 11 years. His term will end tomorrow (Aug 31).

“I want to thank each and every one of you, from the sweepers up to my deputy mayor, for all that you have done throughout my 11 years with MBKS. If it wasn’t for all of you, I would have fall and won’t last this long. I would have quit long time ago,” he addressed a last gathering with MBKS staff at the headquarters here.

Sharing some of his bitter sweet memories with MBKS, Chan admitted that when he took charge in June 1, 2008, there were so many challenges faced by the council, from operations to staffing, finance, and beautification of the city.

“Over the years, we’ve faced many tough challenges. However, all of you stood by me and helped turned MBKS to what it is today,” he commended their hard works and commitment.

“When members of the public praised me as the best mayor for this council, I told them they are wrong. The truth is, all of you are the best staff one can ask for. You are the sun that shines MBKS,” he added.

He continued to stress on the importance of maintaining their good work, including passion, integrity and sincerity to serve the people.

“You must love your work and MBKS. Make sure our city hall is stable and serve the people well. You must also be family oriented. If you look after your family well, then your home will be happy, and in return, you will be happy at work,” he reminded.

“Although my last day with MBKS is tomorrow, do not shy away from contacting me. If you see me out there, do give me a shout out. Once again, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart,” he said.
