KUCHING, May 16: The Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) Global has been granted Implementation Partner status by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), strengthening Malaysia’s role as a regional hub for parliamentary engagement on population, reproductive health, gender equality, youth empowerment, and sustainable development as host of the AFPPD Global Secretariat.

In a Facebook post, AFPPD Malaysia president and Works Minister, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, said that an agreement on the matter was signed on Tuesday (May 12).

“This status enables AFPPD Global to implement UNFPA-funded workplans under the 2026–2029 UNFPA Global and Regional Programme, strengthening its role in advancing parliamentary cooperation on population and development issues across the region.

“I extend my warmest congratulations to Hon. Howard Lee Chuan How, Ipoh Timor Member of Parliament, who serves as secretary-general of AFPPD Global and deputy president of AFPPD Malaysia, for his leadership in securing this important milestone,” he said.

Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said the achievement is also significant for Malaysia as it affirms the nation’s growing role as a trusted partner in international parliamentary and UN-linked cooperation.

“AFPPD Malaysia looks forward to supporting AFPPD Global in translating this recognition into meaningful work for the people of Asia and the Pacific,” he said. — DayakDaily
