BEKENU, Oct 5: The tourism potential and local economy in Subis district can be given a further boost through adventure and water sports activities.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan thus pointed out that the Subis Water Sports Fiesta, which combined nature, culture and physical activities, was one such events that can draw people and enthusiasts.

“This event can play a significant role in making Subis as an attractive tourist destination to lure in more visitors especially from Brunei Darussalam,” he addressed the launching of the Fiesta today.

“This in turn will also help spur and support the local economy,” he said in his text-of-speech read out by Assistant Minister for Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus.

The two-day Fiesta, which kicked off on Oct 4, hoped to draw 10,000 people this year.

There were 36 events being organised throughout the Fiesta including powerboat and raft races.

Awang Tengah hopes that businesses such as homestays in Subis and the surrounding areas can benefit from the Fiesta.

Subis Water Sports Fiesta was organised by the Subis District Office in collaboration with Bekenu, Lambir and Sibuti services centres together with the Rancah Rancab Sports Club.

The main objective of the event, which has been organised since 2016, was to promote the tourism potential of Subis and its surrounding areas through adventure and water sports.
