KUCHING, March 24: Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah intends to revitalise the area along the Kuching waterfront and transform it into a more vibrant tourist destination.

According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Abdul Karim stated that one of his goals was to convert the former Kuching Municipal Council building opposite the Padang Merdeka Central Police Station into an art gallery.

“I am very excited to see the development of arts and creativity in the city of Kuching because it reflects that the community has reached a higher level,” he said on Wednesday while officiating at the launch of the YAST Art (Phygital) Physical and Digital Arts Platform in Kuching.

Abdul Karim also stated that his ministry plans to establish a performing arts centre in the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building.

“We will also establish our own performing arts centre in the old DUN building.

“I’d like to see weekly drama, singing, and dance performances at the centre as soon as it opens,” he added.

Meanwhile, he hoped that the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), Borneo Jazz Festival, and Country Music Festival, which had been postponed for the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, would be held this year. — DayakDaily
