MIRI, July 4: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has proposed the introduction of electric buses in Miri as part of his vision for the city’s low-carbon future.

He said he had suggested the idea to Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang earlier today, noting that electric buses would improve air quality while reducing noise pollution.

“Earlier, I suggested to the mayor and his colleagues that perhaps we should use electric buses in Miri.

“These buses do not produce smoke, and they operate without noise. This means Miri will not only have clean air but also be free from noise pollution,” he said when officiating at the Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival (TOBC) 4.0 here tonight, which was streamed live by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).

Abang Johari also said he was briefed on the Miri Smart City Command Centre (MSCCC) earlier today, describing digitalisation as a new approach to managing the city through technology.

He said the system enables authorities to monitor developments more effectively while enhancing public safety.

“I would like to congratulate the council for working together with the citizens so that they can live happily and enjoy their lives,” he said.

Touching on Miri’s low carbon development, Abang Johari said the city is developing a gas turbine power project capable of generating 500 megawatts (MW) of electricity, with plans to add another 500MW by 2029.

“If we succeed, we can add another 500 megawatts of power in Miri through the gas turbine by 2029.

“This is what we envision for the future, and I wish Miri all the best for the future,” he added.
