KUCHING, July 10: The proposed New Malaysia Agreement will invalidate the existing Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and thus, question the formation of the country, says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the existing MA63 was an agreement that the leaders had agreed upon at that time for the formation of the Federation of Malaysia.
“What happens now is that most of the matters agreed upon would be eroded. So what we do is uphold the matters in the (existing) agreement and not create a new agreement.
“If you make a new agreement, you invalidate the old agreement (MA63). If you invalidate the agreement, then the formation of Malaysia is being questioned because the MA63 is fundamental,” he said.
He told this to reporters during the handing over ceremony of sacrificial cows and korban meat for the Gedong constituency in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration held at Masjid Al-Kawthar in Gedong today.
Abang Johari further said instead of a new Malaysia Agreement, which was suggested by Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan on July 2, what Sabah and Sarawak need now is the implementation and fulfilment of matters enshrined under MA63 and Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report.
“The federal government is already in discussion regarding this MA63 implementation, and I believe at the end of the day, we will be able to achieve results desired by Sabah and Sarawak,” he added. — DayakDaily
