KUCHING, May 22: A 37-year-old local woman was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol during a traffic enforcement operation along Jalan Tabuan here yesterday (May 21).
According to Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the operation was carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD) from 11.30pm on May 20 until 3.30am the next day.
He said the operation, involving a senior police officer and 11 personnel, was aimed at ensuring road users do not drive under the influence of alcohol as it endangers both other motorists and the drivers themselves.
“During the operation, the suspect was subjected to a breathalyser test using the SD2+ device, which recorded 186 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood,” he said in a statement issued today.
The woman was subsequently brought to Kuching IPD for further investigation.
Alexson said the suspect is being investigated under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving a motor vehicle with an alcohol level exceeding the permitted limit of 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.
If convicted, the offence carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine ranging from RM10,000 to RM30,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least two years from the date of conviction.
Throughout the operation, police inspected 65 individuals and 62 vehicles, comprising 25 cars, 18 motorcycles, 13 four-wheel-drive vehicles, and six multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs).
A total of 33 PDRM (K) 257 summonses were also issued for various traffic offences.
Alexson said such operations will continue from time to time to reduce the risk of road accidents caused by drunk driving.
He also advised road users not to drive under the influence of alcohol as it not only endangers other road users but also the driver’s own life. — DayakDaily
