KUCHING, April 27: The Rotary Club of Kuching Unity City and volunteers have donated essential items worth RM1,000 per household to nine single-parent families from Kampung Haji Baki on April 23rd, just in time for the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

According to a statement issued today by the Rotary Club of Kuching Unity City, they delivered essential items to the Kampung Haji Baki B40 community, including food, groceries, hygiene products, supplements, diapers, and milk powder.

“The initiative to provide necessities on a regular basis to the 111 single-parent families of the Kampung Haji Baki will be part of the Rotary Club of Kuching Unity City’s Empowering Girls and Young Women project,” the statement said.

As said by the project leader Esther Hu, most B40 single-parents are struggling to find “rezeki” (income) for their families in urban areas due to a lack of education and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Therefore, we are here to provide them with some short-term relief,” she stated.

Meanwhile, chairman of the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Lo Khere Chiang was also present to support this charitable work.

“Rotary serves to change people’s lives. I’m glad to see all the happy faces here because Rotary members truly help others, and after they help, they themselves feel happy and satisfied.

“I know they’ve been here the last few rounds to donate the same to 20-30 families, as well as the sanitary pads for the women in the B40 community.

“I thank them for doing their best to help our community here,” the chairman said of the noble deed.

Furthermore, the Rotary Club of Kuching Unity City president Chew Teik Seng stated that according to Penghulu Kampung Mdm Hajjah Sabtuyah, the increased school dropouts, particularly those after Primary 6, have raised further concern, and she hopes to be able to work with Rotary in imparting effective awareness to this community, particularly the parents, who are the greatest influencers on their children.

“As one of our seven areas of focus is education, we as Rotarians will investigate this and find a more sustainable solution,” Chew added.

Likewise, the Rotary Club of Kuching Unity City is looking for more like-minded people to join them as members or volunteers to help those less fortunate groups.
