KUCHING, March 19: The sixth edition of the What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2024 will have satellite mini-festivals in Sibu and Miri.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the two satellite mini-festival would be held in June (Sibu) and August (Miri), respectively.
“These will extend the cultural extravaganza to our creative communities in central and northern Sarawak,” he said at a press conference held after the launching ceremony of the Call for Proposals for WAK 2024 at a local hotel here today.
On the same note, Abdul Karim also invited creative communities throughout Sarawak to seize the opportunity by participating and submitting their proposals for this year’s WAK.
“Let us come together to transform the month of October into a spectacular showcase of artistic innovation and cultural exchange,” he added.
Since its inception in 2017 as a grassroots festival featuring 57 unique events and 48 collaborators, the WAK Festival has evolved into a significant cultural force, drawing an audience of 277,766 in 2023.
The continuous expansion and success of the WAK Festival underscore its growing importance in the local and regional cultural landscape.
Encompassing diverse creative communities, the WAK Festival offers a wide array of events, including Live Music performances, Sports Challenges, Arts and crafts exhibitions, Engaging Children’s programs, Local Community Showcases, and International Professional Workshops—all guided by its principle: ‘By the Community, For the Community’.
