KUCHING, June 24: A 67-year-old man lost RM111,245 after falling victim to an online part-time job scam advertised on Facebook.
According to Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the victim reportedly came across a Facebook page named “RWESHOPS” offering lucrative part-time work opportunities with commission-based earnings.
“Enticed by the promise of easy income, he registered and was subsequently given a series of online tasks.
“The victim was instructed to make multiple payments in order to ‘complete tasks’ and receive commissions. Believing the scheme was legitimate, he carried out 24 transactions into six different bank accounts as directed by the scammers.
“By the time he realised he had been deceived, the total losses had reached RM111,245,” he said in a statement yesterday (June 23).
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, which carries a prison sentence of not less than one year and up to ten years, as well as whipping and a possible fine upon conviction.
Alexson urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly against part-time job offers circulated on social media that promise unusually high returns.
He also reminded the public to verify suspicious bank accounts and phone numbers through the official Semak Mule portal at https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my before engaging in any financial transactions.
Those who suspect they have been scammed are advised to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) hotline at 997 within 24 hours for immediate assistance.
Members of the public are also encouraged to report suspicious activities to the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) Sarawak via 011-62890089 or email kjsjkswk@rmp.gov.my. — DayakDaily
