KUCHING, July 21: A 63-year-old local man has been arrested after police intercepted a Toyota Fortuner in Padawan and uncovered 25kg of suspected methamphetamine worth RM1.25 million, enough to supply an estimated 125,000 drug users.
In a statement today, the arrest was made during a raid conducted by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Padawan District Police Headquarters (IPD) at a parking area in MJC Batu Kawa New Township on July 15, following intelligence gathered by police.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said officers detained the suspect while he was inside the vehicle before a subsequent search uncovered the suspected methamphetamine.
“Investigations found that the suspect was believed to be acting as a runner for a drug trafficking syndicate.
“Checks also revealed that the suspect has one previous criminal record under Section 5(1) of the Entertainment Ordinance 2000 and the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. However, he tested negative for drugs and has no prior drug-related offences,” he said.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days from July 16 to July 23 to facilitate investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction. Where the death penalty is not imposed, offenders face no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane.
“Sarawak police will continue intensifying enforcement operations to detect, hunt down and cripple drug trafficking syndicates through an aggressive and integrated approach aimed at cutting off the drug supply chain, seizing criminal proceeds and bringing those involved to justice,” he added.
He said the commitment is reflected in the force’s “No Day Without Arrests” approach as part of its ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime and safeguard the community.
He also urged members of the public to continue cooperating with police by providing information on drug trafficking and drug abuse activities through the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department hotlines, assuring that the identities of informants will be kept confidential. — DayakDaily
