KUCHING, Aug 12: A 29-year-old woman was charged at the Sessions Court here today with allegedly causing injury to a 20-day-old baby at a confinement centre on Aug 4.
The accused, from Kampung Nyiru Grait, Puncak Borneo, pleaded not guilty before Judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar.
She was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 (Act 611), which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.
The court was told that the accused had been entrusted with the care of the infant but allegedly handled and lifted the baby from a cot negligently, in a manner that could have caused physical injury.
The incident allegedly occurred between 12.30am and 1.30am on Aug 4 at a confinement centre in Jalan Setia Raja.
The infant was subsequently alleged to have suffered a closed fracture of the right humerus.
Judge Noorhisham granted the accused bail of RM10,000 with two local sureties and ordered her to report to a police station once a month.
The court fixed Sept 14 for pre-trial case management.
Deputy public prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Roger Chin represented the accused. — DayakDaily
