KUCHING, Sept 19: A total of 220kg of mixed rubbish were collected by firefighters, community firefighters and their spouses at Pasir Panjang beach this morning.
In conjunction with World Cleanup Day 2020, the event was organised by Persatuan Suri dan Anggota Wanita Bomba Penyelamat (Perisma) Sarawak and led by its chairperson Sorryta Asgar Khan.
Among those who took part in the community programe were villagers from Kampung Pasir Panjang and Kampung Pasir Pandak, Bomba Komuniti Pantai Damai, Bomba Komuniti Tupong, firefighters from Petra Jaya and Padungan stations.
The 150 team members collected about 220kg of various rubbish, with plastic bags contributing the most at 2,111 pieces, followed by cigarette butts (457); plastic beverage bottles (376); plastic straws (350); plastic cups and plates (348); gloves (300); beverage cans (146), plastic bottle caps (181) and others.
“This is part of Perisma’s community engagement in keeping our beach clean. The initiative is also to build a resilience community. Everyone should focus in ensuring that our environment is clean, safe, healthy and sustainable,” Sorryta disclosed.
World Cleanup Day is an annual global social action programme aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including the problem of marine debris.-DayakDaily
