KUCHING, Nov 24: The Federal government’s RM117 million upgrading project for Stapang Water Filtration Plant to 7MLD (million litres per day) and 110km pipeline connection is suffering from huge delays, causing Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira (GPS-PRS) to seek help from the Sarawak government.
He explained that the project would involve upgrading the existing water treatment plant in Stapang and laying pipelines to areas such as Skuau, Oya Pakoh, Jalan Nanga Tajam, Batang Oya, Batu 36 Tamin up to Jalan Kua Ulu Mukah.
“On the huge delay of the construction of water supply in Stapang/Skuau area, (despite the budget of RM117 million which has been approved under Federal government), I will seek help from the Sarawak Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunication to accelerate the matter.
“I am also requesting to speed up the upgrading works of Selangau water treatment plant and the laying of pipelines to Dijih/Ulu Baoh, Ulu Selangau and Ulu Arip Balingian where allocation has already been approved by the Federal government,” said Gira when debating the Sarawak Budget 2024 during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
Meanwhile, he also reported that the Sarawak government is currently in the process of site acquisition to set up several new 4G telecommunication towers across Selangau District including in Tamin and Kakus area.
He said the upgrade would improve the quality of telecommunication coverage over the Selangau District and is part of the project run under the National Digital Network (Jendela) plan initiated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA)
“Hopefully with the completion of all these towers by the end of this year, the people in Selangau, including the people in Tamin and Kakus, can benefit from better services in internet and telecommunication,” said Gira. — DayakDaily
