SIBU, April 15: Four persons have been arrested in connection with the theft of RM175,000 in unclaimed money.

Three of the suspects, including a woman, were detained today, while one was arrested yesterday (April 14).

Of the four suspects, aged between 29 and 42, two of them are civil servants.

They were alleged to have forged documents to steal the unclaimed money.

The suspects were produced at the Magistrate’s Court today, where Magistrate Romario Jonoi ordered them remanded for three days until April 18.

Their remand was to facilitate police investigations under Sections 420 (cheating) and 471 (forging documents) of the Penal Code.

On April 6, during a press conference at Sibu MP Oscar Ling’s service centre, a retiree said that his late mother’s unclaimed money, totalling RM116,000, had disappeared from the unclaimed money account.

The victim, Lau Kah Lee, 65, said he found out about the matter on December 25 last year, when he was submitting the relevant documents to claim the money at the Accountant-General’s Department counter here.

He was told that the money was no longer in the account. — DayakDaily
