18 people including Chinese national arrested for illegal gambling

SIBU, Dec 5: Eighteen people were arrested on suspicion of being involved in illegal gambling activities on the second floor of a building along Jalan Central last night.

Acting Sibu District Police Chief, Superintendent Collin Babat said nine of the 15 male suspects were aged between 62 and 79 years and the other suspects who were women were aged between 35 to 59 years.

The suspects which included a 54-year-old Chinese female national, were apprehended in the operation at 3.30pm.

“During the raid, the police found that all the individuals were gathered at four tables and were playing “Tou Gee” and “Mahjong” gambling games,” Collin said in a statement today.

All the suspects were found to have committed offenses under Section 6 (1) of the Common Gambling House Act (ARJT) 1953.

Meanwhile, the Chinese national will be investigated under the Immigration Act for failing to submit any valid personal travel documents.

According to Collin, the police also confiscated cash amounting to RM659, four tables, 18 plastic chairs, 120 mahjong pieces, 336 Tou Gee pieces, 119 chips and various gambling paraphernalia as case evidence.

“All those detained were instructed to undergo a Covid-19 swab test and the results were negative,” he said.

All the suspects were brought to the Sungai Merah Police Station lockup for further investigation and action. — DayakDaily
