KUCHING, Jan 15: The 16-year-old boy who was driving without license and caused a horrific accident that claimed five lives on Jalan Teo Kui Seng-Stutong Baru yesterday (Jan 14)) will be detained after receiving treatment for neck injuries at the hospital.
Kuching District Police chief Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occured when the teenager, driving from Airport Road towards Stutong Baru, lost control of the vehicle and veered into the opposite lane.
The car collided withtwo cars and two motorcycles travelling in the opposite direction.
“The accident is believed to have occured around 12.50pm, involving three cars and two motorcycles.
“As a result, As a result, four victims—three males and one female, all locals aged between 16 and 45—died at the scene. Another 16-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment in the Red Zone at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH),” he said in a statement yesterday.
Mohd Farhan added that the three victims who sustained injuries are still undergoing treatment at the hospital’s emergency unit.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. If convicted, the offender faces a prison sentence of five to 10 years and a fine between RM20,000 and RM50,000.
