KUCHING, April 3: Seven local men and six foreigners were arrested by the police for operating an online gambling centre from a residence in Jalan Stampin.
Sarawak police commissioner Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri in a statement today said the arrests were made during a raid conducted by a police team from Kuching District police headquarters (IPD Kuching) D7 branch on April 2.
“All of the men, aged 18- to 36-years-old, are operators hired to run the operation by making calls to customers to promote online gambling.
“In addition, they also promote online gambling using mobile application and social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, WeChat, Skype and Facebook,” he said.
Mohd Azman said the police also seized nine computer monitor units, nine central processing units (CPUs), 26 cell phones, a router, a modem and various other equipment.
He said an initial investigation found that the centre has been operating 24-hours a day for the last three months, raking in RM1,000 daily and reaching up to RM30,000 per month.
“Police are now in the process of tracking the actual owner of the property.
“The case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and the remand applications will be made today in the Kuching court complex,” he added. — DayakDaily
