SIBU, Sept 11: Sibu Municipal Council (MPS) made history after 1,258 participants took part in a mass kampua tossing event at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 here last night (Sept 10), setting a Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) record for the largest participation.
According to a TVS report, organising committee chairman Councillor Michelle Law said the number of participants exceeded the initial target of 1,000 set for the record.
“Initially, the response was not very encouraging. However, the number of participants surged with the assistance of the United Chinese Association (UCA) and the involvement of social media influencers,” she told reporters at the event.
The event was held as part of the ‘Spectacular Night’ of the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2026.
A total of 800 participants registered through the online platform, and the remainder joined through on-site registration, private sector participation, and student groups.
“Among the local institutions and organisations that helped make the programme a success were Pilley Methodist Institute and SM Wong Nai Siong, which brought a total of 68 participants, as well as local companies such as Mafrika, with 10 participants, and Farley.
“The event was also enlivened by international participants from China and Brunei, as well as tourists from France and the United States. Dancers and overseas performers who were in town for the festival also took part in the noodle-tossing session,” she added.
The organisers had to stop registration in the final minutes to stick to the event schedule and ensure there was enough kampua noodles for the registered participants.
However, an earlier plan to bring a group from Jakarta could not be realised due to a delay in the group’s flight.
MBOR representative Edwin Yeoh presented the certificate of recognition to Law, with MPS chairman Councillor Clarence Ting Ing Horh in attendance.
Meanwhile, 11 stalls were set up at the event venue to prepare the iconic local dish, comprising five halal stalls and six non-halal stalls. — DayakDaily
