KUCHING, Oct 13: Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) will conduct its seventh webinar, a series from ‘Things That Bind Us’ (TTBU) this Saturday (Oct 15) titled ‘Traditional Fisheries Practices: Sarawak’s Sustainable Fishery’.

According to a media release today, this webinar aims to understand the various types of traditional fishery practices in Sarawak as well as the challenges to conserving such practices in Sarawak while at the same time to garner the business prospects of the fisheries industry in Sarawak and exploring current marketing strategies.

The webinar will be moderated by Borneo Eco Fish Sdn Bhd managing director Thomas Hii Tiong Kiong.

The speakers invited by YPS to speak are Dr Victor Luna from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (Eco-tourism and Community-based Tourism, CBT) and Emylin Badut from Inland Fisheries Division, Department of Agriculture Sarawak.

YPS shared that Sarawak’s fisheries are divided into marine capture fisheries and aquaculture, where fishermen still rely on unique traditional fisheries practices which have been passed down from one generation to the next.

As such, YPS emphasised that Sarawak with diverse traditions and cultures promotes unity among the Sarawakians about these unique traditional fishery practices.

Every ethnic group in Sarawak has a different approach and method, which binds the community together.
