KUCHING, Oct 22: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) elected representatives cannot afford to rely on old ways of engaging voters as a younger, more informed electorate demands leaders who can keep pace with changing times, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said voters aged 18 and above belonged to a different generation from those elected representatives had encountered earlier in their political careers, making it necessary for leaders to broaden their knowledge and stay abreast of emerging issues.
“If you don’t know the basics of artificial intelligence (AI), how are you going to answer them?” he said during his speech at GPS Backbenchers Night at a hotel here on Wednesday (Oct 21).
Abang Johari said political leadership must evolve alongside the electorate, requiring representatives to remain knowledgeable and adaptable as Sarawak’s economy and society changed.
He also acknowledged that leadership would eventually pass to a younger generation, reflecting the need for continued renewal within the State’s political leadership.
The Premier urged GPS representatives to prepare for these changes and remain responsive to their constituents’ expectations as Sarawak moves towards 2030 and beyond. — DayakDaily
