KUCHING, Oct 22: Sarawak needs a stronger economy capable of offering skilled jobs if it wants more of its talented people to return instead of building their careers elsewhere, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He cited Jacinta Lim, a physiotherapist from Limbang who returned after completing a Master’s in Clinical Physiotherapy at Curtin University in Australia, as an example of Sarawakians using their qualifications to build careers and contribute to the community at home.

Lim received a full scholarship and stipend from Yayasan Sarawak in 2016 to pursue her postgraduate studies. After returning, she established physiotherapy centres under Rehab Concept and became involved in rehabilitation services and public awareness programmes.

Abang Johari highlighted her journey during his speech at GPS Backbenchers Night at a hotel here on Wednesday (Oct 21), pointing to the importance of creating opportunities for qualified Sarawakians to apply their expertise in the State.

He said Sarawak’s ability to attract and retain skilled professionals depended on whether its economy could offer suitable career prospects.

“If the economy is not good, they will work outside Sarawak,” he said. — DayakDaily
