KUCHING, June 20: While the crowd of festive-goers shuffles through the vibrant grounds of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025 at Sarawak Cultural Village, immersed in Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage and indulging in the local cuisine, a quieter force is at work behind the scenes.

Dressed in green that seems to blend with the lush rainforest backdrop, a group of young volunteers move through the crowd, armed with trash pickers and gunny sacks. Their mission; to keep the grounds clean and their conscience cleaner.

These young Green Warriors are a group of young volunteers mobilised by the Regenerative X Association to support the festival’s commitment to sustainability and eco-conscious practices.

“Our objective is to ensure that Sarawak Cultural Village is kept clean. We don’t just ensure that the place are kept clean, we make sure that trash is properly separated according to the type of trash like tin, plastic, paper, and others.

“This is to make sure that it could be recycled,” Danish Irwan Bin David, 21-year-old volunteer from ICATS shared as fellow volunteers around him continue their tiring yet selfless act of collecting trash and transporting it to eco-stations strategically placed around the venue, each equipped with designated recycling bins.

Danish emphasised that the initiative also sends a strong message to the world about the festival’s serious commitment to green values.

Most of the volunteers are youths from universities nearby, including Kuching and Sibu, with students hailing from across the country.

By taking part in the programme, they gain hands-on experience in recycling and develop a stronger sense of environmental responsibility.

For the past decade, RWMF has championed green initiatives, from promoting recycling and composting food waste to raising awareness about sustainable living. With the help of these young volunteers, the festival reinforces its commitment to caring for the Earth. – DayakDaily
