KUCHING, July 26: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) central publicity chief Adam Yii has criticised Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman for being ignorant about Sarawak and East Malaysia as part of the country.
Yii in a press statement today said he was baffled by the remarks made by Tajuddin in the Parliament recently about Malaysia as just being Tanah Melayu.
“As Sarawakians, we are shocked and dismayed when Tajuddin mentioned in Parliament that Malaysia is Tanah Melayu, and it is obvious that he has taken Malaya as Malaysia or Malaysia as Malaya.
“And we would like to remind him that there would be no Malaysia without Sarawak, but without Malaysia, there is still Sarawak.
“The fact is that we are one of the four political entities, namely Federation of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak that formed Malaysia as equal partners in September 16, 1963.
“As far as we are concerned, the following two dates are of importance to us.
“July 22, 1963 – the day Sarawak was granted self government and is considered to be de facto Sarawak Independence, and the second date is Malaysia Day when the Federation of Malaysia was formed on September 16, 1963,” he said in the statement.
Yii, who is SUPP information secretary, said the political party strongly disagreed with the action taken by the police to confiscate the Sarawak Crown Flags during Sarawak Independence Day celebration on July 22 because it was part and parcel of Sarawak history and heritage.
Yii, who is also Miri City mayor, said the Sarawak history and heritage ought to be respected and not criminalised. —DayakDaily
